Travel Hockey Financial Overview

Costs and Expectations

Travel hockey registration fees are intended to provide families with a predictable and transparent cost structure while supporting a positive and development-focused travel hockey experience.
Beginning with the 2026–2027 season, travel team registration fees include most core team and operational expenses, reducing the need for team managers to collect additional funds or manage team budgets throughout the season.

Registration Fees

Travel team registration fees help cover:

  • Discounted ice time for home games and practices*
  • Game officials
  • MAHA league fees
  • Athletic training services
  • Subscriptions and technology platforms (Hudl, TeamSnap, etc.)
  • Uniforms, pucks, and team equipment
  • End-of-season celebrations
  • Administrative and operational expenses
  • Non-parent coaching stipends and approved travel expenses
  • Entry fees for designated home and away tournaments
  • Robby Glantz Power Skating Clinic

*MAYHA’s Board of Directors supports keeping youth hockey accessible by charging travel programs a reduced ice rental rate. This helps lower overall registration costs for families and aligns with MAYHA’s mission of providing inclusive and affordable ice sports opportunities.

Team Expenses

Each travel team will attend a designated number of tournaments during the season (see table below). Tournament costs included within registration fees are non-refundable, regardless of player attendance. MAYHA administration will manage tournament registration and reimbursement for approved non-parent coach travel expenses.
Teams may choose to participate in additional tournaments beyond those included in the registration fee. If additional tournaments are approved by families:

  • MAYHA administration will coordinate registration and create online registration to collect the entry fee and non-parent coaching expenses.
  • Players can opt out in advance of attending these additional tournaments.
  • Costs for additional tournaments will be divided among participating players.
  • Refunds will not be provided after a player commits to participate.

Additional Family & Team Expenses

Travel team registration fees are intended to cover core operational costs of the program. Families should anticipate additional personal and team-related expenses, including:

  • Travel costs such as hotels, meals, and gas
  • Optional off-ice training or independently organized development opportunities
  • Additional player apparel beyond the included player jackets
  • End-of-season player, coach, or manager gifts
  • Other optional expenses the team chooses to incur

Participation in optional team expenses or activities is voluntary and should not create financial pressure on families beyond standard registration fees and associated travel-related costs.

Travel Expectations

MAYHA uses USA Hockey’s American Development Model (ADM) guidelines to support an appropriate balance of practices, games, skill development, and competition. Travel expectations, number of tournaments, approximate travel weekends, and estimated seasonal travel expenses may vary by age division and level of play. “A” teams may travel greater distances and incur higher travel-related costs than “B” or house-level teams.
The game estimates below are intended to provide families with a general planning guideline and are not guarantees.

Travel Team Fundraising/Raffles

Travel teams may organize approved fundraising activities, including raffles and tournament-based fundraising, in accordance with the following guidelines.

Proceeds may be used for:

  • Individual Player Credits applied toward current or future MAYHA/Glacier Ice Rink programs.
  • Donations to MAYHA’s Financial Aid Fund to help support player accessibility and participation opportunities.

Fundraising Guidelines:

  • Teams are responsible for complying with applicable Montana raffle and gaming laws, including any required permits or reporting requirements.
  • Raffle ticket purchases and other gaming activities are not tax-deductible.
  • Fundraising activities benefiting individual players must ensure that:
    • Proceeds are evenly distributed to all team members, regardless of individual fundraising participation
    • All communication clearly states that the activity supports the specific team, rather than Glacier Ice Rink, MAYHA, or the overall youth hockey program.
    • Donors who contribute raffle items are informed that this is a team-specific fundraiser, not a rink- or program-wide initiative, and their donation is not tax-deductible.
  • Teams who donate proceeds to the financial aid fund are responsible for appropriately acknowledging prize donations when requested.
  • Fundraising activities conducted outside of a team’s home tournament requires prior approval from MAYHA administration to avoid conflicts with organizational fundraising priorities.
  • Teams may use the designated MAYHA electronic payment platform, such as Venmo, for fundraising activities. Net proceeds will be credited appropriately following the event.

Financial Aid Fund

  • Families needing help with registration fees are encouraged to apply for financial assistance through the Financial Aid Fund application form on the website.
  • Financial assistance awards may cover up to two-thirds of a player’s registration fees. Families will typically be notified within two weeks of submission.
  • Financial assistance applies only to registration fees and does not cover late registration charges, personal travel expenses, or other team-related expenses. Any remaining balance after financial assistance is applied remains subject to MAYHA’s registration and payment policies.
